The Lusail weekend was dominated by tire issues that experienced unusual micro-cuts. In the morning, it was decided to enforce three mandatory pit stops for each driver.
F1 Qatar, Limited Laps for Each Tire Set
The chaotic Formula 1 weekend in Qatar concerning the tires has led to several unusual developments, such as the mandatory three pit stops for each driver.
In this regard, Pirelli has provided a table specifying the maximum life that each set of tires for every driver must have during the race.
The table complies with the decision made this morning by the FIA, F1, and Pirelli to ensure the safety conditions of the Lusail Grand Prix: during the race, drivers are not allowed to complete more than 18 consecutive laps with the same set of new tires, regardless of the type of compound used. Considering that the Lusail race consists of 57 laps, each driver will need to make at least three pit stops. Those who fail to comply with this limit will receive a black flag and be disqualified.

From the beginning of the Lusail weekend, teams have had to deal with tire problems. After Friday’s Free Practices, Pirelli noticed micro-lacerations on many tires, which were also caused by the pyramidal structure of the curbs on the track. These curbs, along with the asphalt, were reconstructed due to complaints in 2021, but evidently not effectively. Yesterday, prior to the Sprint Shootout, the track limits of turns 12 and 13 were moved 80 cm inward to prevent drivers from hitting the dangerous curbs. Initially, the FIA indicated that the 19 laps of the Sprint race would be the ideal ground to evaluate the effectiveness of the last-minute changes. However, the high number of Safety Car periods prevented a reliable analysis of the impact of the changes on the tires. Consequently, the Federation has ordered a maximum life of 18 laps for each set of Pirelli tires for today’s Qatar Grand Prix.
