The home of Formula 1 is set to remain on the calendar for a long time. With the continuous inclusion of various city circuits, many historic tracks are working to secure a spot in the premier series calendar. Among them is Silverstone, renewing its presence on the Formula 1 calendar for many years.
The English track has hosted the premier series since the early days of Formula 1. In fact, since 1950, the historic Silverstone circuit has been a battleground for the fastest cars in the world. The track located in Northamptonshire has been the first official venue of Formula 1 since May 13, 1950, when the flag was waved to kick off the series. It is the historical venue for the British Grand Prix despite some interruptions.
Silverstone was originally an RAF military airport, and today, the classic layout of 1940s airports is still recognizable. It featured three runways arranged in a triangle where all Royal Air Force planes took off. In the immediate post-war period, motor racing chose the airstrips as the first road venue, but from 1950, the perimeter roads were used. Over the circuit’s long career, there have been several modifications to the track layout. In particular, in 1990 and 1991, the track underwent a redesign that made it slower. In 2010, the circuit was extended by 750 meters, and the starting grid was moved between the Club and Abbey curves, instead of the previous position between Woodcote and Copse. After these significant works, the organizers of the Silverstone circuit are considering various innovations, earning a renewal until 2034. An announcement that will delight many series enthusiasts and was presented by Russell and Norris.
