Formula 1 needs the technology developed by production cars. If such a seemingly bold statement is the essence of the thoughts expressed by a figure as significant as Adrian Newey, then there is reason to believe him. Historically, the premier motorsport series has been a laboratory for testing elements used in everyday vehicles. According to Red Bull’s chief technical officer, it is time for the opposite to happen.
Adrian Newey was primarily referring to aerodynamics, which, in the near future, should enhance the work of power units. “Trying to achieve greater aerodynamic efficiency for the vehicle is clearly a good goal,” the Englishman remarked.
The engineer believes that active aerodynamics should rightfully be part of F1 2026, the regulatory outlines of which are being defined in the appropriate forums. “After all, it has become part of road cars. There is a huge number of cars with spoilers that go up and down on the hood. So why not do it in racing? Active aerodynamics had a bad reputation only when wings came off in the ’60s. Now we are well beyond that.”
Expressing a revolutionary concept, Newey stated that it is time for production to influence F1, completely reversing the equation that worked in the past. The realization of this concept is what we’ve termed “reverse overflow.” The endorsement from the Stratford-upon-Avon designer reinforces what decision-makers are implementing on the motor side.
F1 promotes integration with road motor technology
Nikolas Tombazis, technical director of the FIA, explained how the underlying idea behind the changes to the power unit for 2026 is to accommodate the needs of the motor manufacturers participating in the competition. F1 cannot go in a random direction, said the Greek engineer, who clearly reiterated the concept: “We must choose a path that is related to road cars.”

This philosophy has led Honda to reconsider its decision to bid farewell to the series. But not only that, it has been an attractive magnet for new entities like Audi and old acquaintances like Ford. Moreover, it is no coincidence that Cadillac strongly supports Andretti’s candidacy because it intends to invest in technology with broad implications in the automotive sector.

Formula 1 aims to position itself as the entity that can show the world that the internal combustion engine, having reached such a level of development, is a resource not to be discarded lightly in favor of pure electric. The hybrid model of the power unit can be sublimated using fully eco-friendly fuels both in creation and in exhaust emissions.
Motor manufacturers are not insensitive to this policy, and that’s why they are crowding around the Circus. F1 intends to be the bearer of a non-utopian vision based on concrete elements. It aims to demonstrate, in simple terms, that it is possible to reconcile “traditional” propulsion and environmental needs. Drop-in fuels (next-gen propellants that adapt to existing engines, producing zero-emission) are the future market.
The Net Zero Carbon 2030 program will make all this happen. But to transfer expertise to production, further consolidating it with the sports sector, the cost challenge must be overcome. Ready-to-use fuels can succeed only if they are not a blend for racing cars but become a mass commodity with affordable prices accessible to all.
To make this scenario concrete, political support is needed. Thus, F1 must position itself as a credible interlocutor in direct negotiations with those responsible for making decisions that determine the economic, environmental, and cultural destinies of people. The stakes are high, involving entities that globally generate astronomical revenues. Liberty Media and the FIA are aware of this, which is why they have facilitated the presence of manufacturers that have a decisive influence on long-term geopolitical decisions.
