Formula 1 has officially announced that the Chinese Grand Prix will not take place next season, due to the difficulties represented by the current Covid-19 situation in China.
Formula 1 Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali, confirmed a few weeks ago that the Shanghai event could be in doubt as a result of the Covid restrictions and high case rates in the country.
The Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled to be the fourth race of the record-breaking 2023 Formula One calendar, with the last appearance taking place three years ago, for the Formula 1 1000th race, as China pursues a strict policy of lockdowns and entry restrictions during the pandemic.
The cancellation now leaves a four-week gap to fill between the Australian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix. In a statement Formula 1 has confirmed that “following dialogue with the promoter and relevant authorities, that the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place due to the ongoing difficulties presented by the COVID-19 situation” – the press release also confirmed that the sport is “assessing alternative options to replace the slot on the 2023 calendar and will provide an update on this in due course.”
