On the occasion of the Chinese Grand Prix, the new Sprint format will make its debut: let’s see together what changes compared to last year.
The fifth race of the 2024 Formula 1 season could already decisively direct the title race. While Red Bull seems to be the favorite for the final victory, there is much anticipation to see if Scuderia Ferrari will be able to keep up with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at the 5.451-kilometre Shanghai International Circuit. In this context, the Shanghai weekend represents a very tempting opportunity for the Maranello team since there will be more points available than usual. Indeed, the new Sprint format will debut at the Chinese Grand Prix, so let’s see together what changes compared to last year.
In 2023, Sprint weekends featured only one free practice session and the qualifying session for the race on Friday. Saturday was characterized by shootout qualifying, which defined the starting grid for the Sprint Race held on the same day. Sunday, as always, featured the “main” race.
What changes in 2024?
The main difference from the past is the track activity schedule. On Friday, we will see free practice followed by shootout qualifying valid for Saturday’s mini-race. The next day, the Sprint race will take place in the morning, while in the afternoon, there will be qualifying valid for the race. Sunday will always feature the actual Grand Prix.
In the past months, Formula 1 had given fans the opportunity to vote and give their feedback on the Sprint format used last year. The survey offered the chance to “suggest” new solutions for the coming seasons.
