Thirteen million pounds (almost 16 million euros): this is the price at which one of the most iconic single-seaters in F1 history was sold at an auction in Monte Carlo organized by RM Sotheby’s. It is the Ferrari F2001, driven by Michael Schumacher during the season that earned him his fourth world title. It marks a record for a car driven by the former German driver, seven-time Formula 1 world champion. It surpassed, in fact, the 11.61 million euros of the F2003-GA sold in 2022.
More generally, in the ranking of the most expensive F1 single-seaters ever sold, the F2001 sits just off the podium, in fourth place. At the top is the 1955 Mercedes W196 R Stromlinienwagen, driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, sold earlier this year for the record sum of 47.5 million euros.
With the F2001, already sold in 2017 (for 6.4 million euros), Michael Schumacher won in Monte Carlo—finishing ahead of his teammate Rubens Barrichello—and in Hungary, where he mathematically secured his fourth world title with four races to spare. Not only that: in 2001 Ferrari dominated the scene, also winning the Constructors’ Championship. With this new sale, the F2001 has confirmed its status as a piece of F1 history: designed by Rory Byrne, a three-litre V10 pulsed inside its carbon sidepods. An unforgettable charm for enthusiasts.
