Mattia Binotto says Monza win was out of reach for Ferrari regardless of strategy: “Max was too fast”. Mattia Binotto says Monza win was out of reach for Ferrari.

Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto was interviewed by the Italian media at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix to discuss the events at the Monza circuit and admitted that Red Bull and Max Verstappen were just too fast for Ferrari today, regardless of the tyre strategy. The Dutchman proved he deserved to win the race based on speed and performance, as well as his pace and his ability to manage the tires better thanks to a different set-up that instead penalized the RB18 on the straights, but has given Red Bull the chance to make the tyre last more than the opponents.

“Max was very strong today and it was hard to beat him. When the virtual safety car was deployed, we saw that we had a little more degradation than him and it would have been difficult to overtake him with the same strategy. For this reason we preferred to diversify and I think it was the right choice. They too were ready to stop and if we had stayed out I think they would have made the opposite decision. We stopped, we opted for a two-stop strategy, perhaps to take advantage of a safety car in the final part of the race, which then occurred. Too bad it went like this.” – Mattia Binotto explained.

“We had a great qualifying session yesterday. Today the first stint on the softs, despite a slightly higher degradation compared to Max, was good. Charles was keeping the pace. It is true that Verstappen could take advantage of the tow, which here is worth about 3 tenths per lap, but at the beginning of the race Charles was lapping fast.” – the Ferrari boss added.

When asked about Carlos Sainz’s race, Mattia Binotto said: “Carlos had a great race. Among those who started from the bottom he the driver who made the best comeback. Too bad for him in the end because he had mounted new tires and had the chance to pass Russell and finish on the podium”.

The Ferrari team principal confirmed the fact that today’s result was good based on what was seen on the track, albeit with some regret linked to tire degradation that slowed down the F1-75.

“Overall it was a good weekend for us with some regrets. Max remains very strong and the question mark remains about the major tyre degradation we have had today. In this final part of the season it is important for us to try to continue to do well, fight and try to win. Our goal is to be competitive until the end of the championship. We have many races left to try to improve and correct the problems we have also in view of 2023. The more we improve this year, the more ready we will be for next season “, concluded Mattia Binotto.
