Lewis Hamilton disheartened: “Terrible day, I don’t know what to say. It’s probably just my fault”. Lewis Hamilton was left deeply disappointed after finishing sixth in the Spanish GP.

Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari 2025 F1

Lewis fails to shine
After securing fifth place in qualifying, Lewis Hamilton managed to gain a position at the start of the Spanish Grand Prix, finding himself in fourth place by the first corner. However, the Briton was unable to keep up with the pace of the three cars ahead of him (Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris), to the point that Ferrari asked him to let Charles Leclerc through, who was coming up behind him – after initially trying to defend his position.

A slow pit stop then dropped him down to sixth place, behind George Russell. The arrival of the Safety Car due to Antonelli’s retirement did not help Hamilton either, who was even overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber. In the final part of the race, Hamilton reported poor sensations with his Ferrari, stating over the radio: “Unbelievable guys, something was wrong with this car. It’s never felt this bad.”

Seventh at the finish line later became sixth following Max Verstappen’s penalty. A meagre consolation for the British champion, who was expecting to fight for much better results in this 2025 Formula 1 season.

Few words from Lewis
In these first months at Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has taken fans of the Scuderia through an emotional rollercoaster and has never hidden his feelings from the media. Today, after a race like this, he was decidedly short-spoken and visibly downbeat. Here is the transcript of his TV interviews: the back-and-forth with the Ferrari driver says more than any summary could.

Sky Italia
Question: “Were you expecting a more attacking race today?”
LH: “I expected the car to perform a bit better.”
Question: “What went wrong? The pace, the feeling with the car…?”
LH: “It just didn’t work, and I didn’t expect it.”

Sky UK
Question: “Hi Lewis, at the end of the race you said ‘something was wrong with this car’. Can you tell us what you meant?”
LH: “Not really, it just wasn’t a great day. Just not a great day.”
Question: “And in terms of strategy?”
LH: “The strategy was good, the team did a great job. That’s all.”
Question: “I hate seeing you like this, it’s tough to see you in this mood…”
LH: “What do you want me to say? I just had a bad day and I have nothing to add. It was a tough day and there’s nothing more to say. It was terrible. There’s no point in explaining it, it’s not your fault, I just don’t know what else to say.”
Question: “I understand, I hope they can find some answers for you.”
LH: “I’m sure they won’t. It’s probably just my fault.”

DAZN Spain
Question: “Hi Lewis, how are you feeling?”
LH: “I just want to go home.”
Question: “How did it feel after the Safety Car?”
LH: “Not particularly good, I was slow.”

It’s slowly becoming abundantly clear what some people have been saying for a long time – Hamilton is not and never was one of the best drivers of all time, never at the level of Senna or Schumacher. Hamilton thought he was making a smart move – he’s going to Ferrari, who are now waiting even longer for a drivers’ title than when Schumacher arrived. He comes, wins the title and surpasses Schumacher in every way, that was his plan. Win the eighth title and bring the title to Ferrari faster than Schumacher. But where Schumacher shone thanks to his outstanding talent and fought for titles even in the worst cars, Hamilton is just slow and bad and fights for fifth or sixth places. And so Hamilton’s move shows only one thing – that unlike Senna or Schumacher, without the best car he is incapable of doing anything other than finishing in midfield. That the titles and records he has won are down to the superior Mercedes cars, not him. This becomes even clearer when you see that in the years when he undoubtedly didn’t have the best car, he only fought for fifth or sixth place. 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, or 2022, 2023 and 2024. I think Hamilton himself is also slowly coming to the realization that he was never the highly talented driver at the level of a Senna or Schumacher and that there is probably more to the rumors that he was preferred by McLaren in 2008 than he and everyone else wanted to believe. Unfortunately, it is now becoming too clear, even to him, because the figures speak volumes. And the move that was supposed to make him undoubtedly the greatest driver of all time and put Schumacher in the shade is now clear proof that in reality he was and is just an average driver who has simply had an outrageous amount of luck in his career and was far from having anything like the talent and ability of Schumacher or Senna. And Vasseur has to put up with the accusation of not having recognized what was actually already obvious in 2022, 2023 and 2024 – namely that Hamilton simply lacks talent and ability and always has lacked it and that he has wasted Ferrari’s second cockpit and made it worse. It is time for Ferrari to revise this completely wrong decision and send Hamilton back to where he belongs – to a midfield team or retirement and into the annals of F1 history, revealed as a midfield driver who has only been outrageously lucky in his career.
