Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli have revealed the tyre choices made by each team ahead of next week’s 2019 season opener in Australia.
Pirelli has tweaked its naming system for 2019, dropping the ‘rainbow range’, and instead bringing a Hard, Medium and Soft nomination to each event. These are selected from a reduced range of five compounds, named C1 to C5, which increase in wear, grip and softness. For the opening event of the campaign the C2 is Hard, the C3 is Medium and the C4 is Soft. The regulations regarding sets of tyres are the same as in 2018, with drivers permitted free choice of compounds for 10 of their allocated 13 sets for the weekend.
For the race which will take place at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Alfa Romeo Racing driver Kimi Raikkonen will have one set of the hardest compound, three sets of the medium tyres and nine sets of Red Soft C4. A slightly different approach for teammate Antonio Giovinazzi, who has opted for an extra set of the White Hard C2 and just two sets of the medium compound.
Renault is the only team that has maxed out on C4 tyres, with Racing Point and Williams the most conservative with eight sets of the softest rubber.
The 2019 season kicks off in Australia on March 15-17.
