Kimi Raikkonen è stato a lungo in vetta alla classifica dei tempi di giornata, venendo scalzato a pochi minuti dalla bandiera a scacchi dalla Toro Rosso di Kvyat: 58 millesimi la differenza tra i due piloti che hanno montato le mescole hypersoft, ma mentre la Toro Rosso è sembrata essere in pista con poca benzina (dai movimenti del posteriore della monoposto si è intuito che il carico di carburante fosse al minimo), Raikkonen ha escluso di aver spinto come in una simulazione di giro veloce: “E’ stata solo una prova con gomme hypersoft, punto”.

La C38 funziona bene, Kimi trasuda fiducia e Giovinazzi fatica a contenere l’entusiasmo. Al momento questo è, poi macinando chilometri il quadro sarà più chiaro.

Intanto Raikkonen sembra a suo agio, e nonostante l’Alfa Romeo abbia i box in fondo al paddock (zona poco frequentata dai grandi media) quando Kimi dà appuntamento ai giornalisti c’è il tutto esaurito, come ai tempi della Rossa. Chi lo avrebbe mai detto?

Kimi, secondo tempo e 138 giri all’attivo: sei soddisfatto del lavoro svolto?
“Si, è stata una buona giornata. Ovviamente si cerca sempre qualcosa in più, fa parte del gioco, ma sono stati due giorni in cui si è lavorato nella giusta direzione per comprendere la monoposto. Finora tutto bene”.

Anche se i tempi sul giro non significano molto in questa fase, pensi che con Alfa Romeo e Toro Rosso, che oggi si sono confermate in vetta alla classifica, la lotta a metà schieramento sarà ancora più imprevedibile?
“È impossibile fare delle previsioni basandosi sui primi test, lo sappiamo. Forse ci faremo un’idea più precisa la prossima settimana, ma poi dovremo comunque attendere una prima conferma a Melbourne. Da parte nostra siamo abbastanza soddisfatti, ma in merito a cosa potremo ambire nella prima gara non ne abbiamo ancora idea”.

Come ti senti in macchina?
“Bene, finora abbiamo percorso un buon numero di chilometri, che è sempre un segnale positivo, ma siamo agli inizi e stiamo ancora imparando”.

Che sensazioni hai sentito quando hai montato le gomme C5 hypersoft?
“Può sempre essere migliore, e devo dire che non abbiamo spinto proprio al massimo. Abbiamo fatto alcune prove, ed è stato comunque divertente. Queste prove sono molto importanti per la comprensione degli pneumatici, l’obiettivo è provare l’intera gamma e farsi un’idea sul comportamento di tutte le mescole”.

Lunedì è stato già un buon giorno per te, oggi hai aumentato ulteriormente il chilometraggio. Hai riscontrato già dei progressi?
“Stiamo provando cose e soluzioni differenti, non abbiamo ancora svolto un lavoro vero e proprio sul set-up, sarà un aspetto su cui mi concentrerò nei due giorni che mi restano”.

Quali sono stati finora i principali punti di forza della macchina?
“Non abbiamo ancora percorso dei giri di qualifica, abbiamo solo utilizzato gomme diverse. Ma in generale penso che sia un’auto ben bilanciata e che abbia una buona aderenza. Una volta che iniziamo a spingere vedremo dove arriveremo”.
