From the first race at a converted World War II airbase in rural England to this weekend’s 1,000th Grand Prix at the $337 million international circuit in Shanghai, Formula One has come a long way since it all began in 1950. Silverstone held the first race 69 years ago and the British Grand Prix has remained, with the Italian GP, the only ever-present races on the calendar.
In 70 seasons, Formula One has visited 32 countries across five continents and a street circuit in Vietnam will be the newest addition next year.
Alfa Romeo Racing is a new name with a long history in Formula 1. Alfa Romeo drivers won the first two F1 championships — Giuseppe “Nino” Farina in 1950 and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951 — then left the series after 1985 until returning with Sauber. Current Alfa Romeo Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen is looking forward to the milestone which will by marked by the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend: “The next race will be a special one. I have had the chance to experience some of the great moments in Formula One history and I am happy to continue making history with Alfa Romeo Racing.” – Kimi Raikkonen said, ahead of the third round of the 2019 Formula One season.
