Kimi Raikkonen and a funny story recalled by Jenson Button
Kimi Raikkonen, a champion out of context. In a Formula 1 still hesitant to promote young talents, Iceman made his debut at the age of 21 and was already on a McLaren at 22. In a world where drivers were initially talkative and later increasingly controlled by press offices, the Finn has always remained himself: few words for journalists, sentences of no more than ten words. Yet, behind the scenes, the 2007 world champion knew how to transform and become the soul of every party.
Anyone who knew Kimi Raikkonen outside the circuits can only remember with a smile an evening with Iceman. Jenson Button, another driver who enjoyed having fun off the track, once stated that he found him in his house.
Jenson Button’s comments
“The only story I can remember with Kimi, because most of the others are blurry, is about a night when I was out until 3 in London,” – the 2009 Formula One World Champion began his story in a recent interview for Sky Sports UK. “I was tired, I had to go home. I got into a taxi, arrived at my house, went in, and there was Kimi sitting in my living room, alone. I have no idea how he got there.” – the British racing driver admitted.
Kimi Raikkonen’s track record
Raikkonen’s exploits are easily linked to alcohol consumption, which, as the Finn himself admitted, helps alleviate stress. In his alcoholic curriculum, there is even the episode of showing up drunk at the 2018 FIA Gala: its like scoring a hat-trick on the road for a football player, but not the only funny moment in the former Ferrari driver’s record. This includes, for example, sleeping in a kind of dryer after getting completely wet pretending to be a skier, sleeping naked in the bed of an unknown actor on the morning of his first official appearance as a Ferrari driver, being confined for three weeks during military service after being found drunk and soiled. To think that something like this could happen today would be crazy, in a polished Formula 1 with drivers that are forced to respect some expected standards of behaviour.
