French motor racing executive Jean Todt, who served as the ninth president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and previously was Ferrari’s Formula 1 team principal and chief executive officer, confirmed that former Ferrari and Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher still has a vested interest in the sport, as they watch F1 races together at his home.
The legendary seven-time Formula 1 world champion suffered a tragic skiing accident nine years ago and was placed into a medically induced coma. Michael was taken to the family’s Lake Geneva home in September 2014 where a team of medical staff now help his wife Corinna in looking after the 53-year-old.
As should be the case, Michael Schumacher’s medical condition remains private, at his family’s wishes, but former Ferrari boss Jean Todt remains close to the German and his family.
They worked together for a long time, helping the Maranello team get back to the top of Formula 1, as Michael Schumacher secured an unprecedented five F1 world championships from 2000 to 2004. On Wednesday, Jean Todt provided a rare update about Michael Schumacher – who has not been seen in the public eye since his accident, as the former Ferrari team principal confirmed he visits him and watches Formula 1 races together.
‘I don’t miss Michael, I see him,’ the 76-year-old said in an interview for RTL yesterday – ‘Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael. But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.’
Jean Todt expressed unwavering support for ‘strong’ Schumacher: “I don’t leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we’ve had so many experiences together. The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on. Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He’s so strong.’

Jean Todt was joined by Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, and daughter, Gina, to collect the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne on behalf of the former Scuderia Ferrari driver. This award represents the highest civilian honour available to those born within the region and can be awarded to anyone who has made an outstanding contribution to the world.
The event took place yesterday in Cologne, around six kilometres from Hurth, where Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf were born.
