During the latest episode of his podcast, Italian journalist Giorgio Terruzzi focused on one of the critical issues highlighted by Scuderia Ferrari during a generally positive weekend in the 2023 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal: communication.
In particular, the well-known journalist criticized the Maranello team radios directed at Charles Leclerc, stating that his teammate would not overtake him. Xavi’s words risk sending a rather risky message regarding the team’s hierarchy.
“I didn’t like that double team radio to Charles Leclerc, where they communicated that Carlos Sainz would not attack him. In doing so, they made a colossal mistake: they told the Monegasque that he is the number one driver, even though he is currently behind his teammate. However, I don’t think Ferrari’s real intention was that; rather, they said it to reassure him,” the expert pointed out.
“The Leclerc drama with Vasseur was pitiful.”
The journalist then expressed support for Carlos Sainz, who fell victim to this strategy despite seemingly having a better pace than his teammate: “The message is also offensive to Carlos Sainz because telling a driver of his caliber to stay behind is unpleasant, especially when he was the fastest throughout the race. The best thing would have been to try to overtake and see the pace of a Ferrari against a Mercedes.” – Giorgio Terruzzi continued.

A final note was made regarding the scene between Frederic Vasseur and Charles Leclerc, seen on Saturday after qualifying. On that occasion, the Monegasque apologized for his comments live, embracing the team principal, after venting his frustration against the Maranello team’s qualifying strategy at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal:
“On Saturday, for the first time, Charles Leclerc confronted Ferrari head-on. It’s the first time he has done it in five years, but the timing was not appropriate. However, I believe that the press officers conspired to stage the pitiful act of standing there with Fred Vasseur and saying everything was fine. It was a mockery towards the fans,” Giorgio Terruzzi said bitterly following the Canadian Grand Prix.
