The Imola Grand Prix is officially off the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, but Stefano Domenicali isn’t giving up. The decision, approved by the FIA and Liberty Media, marks the end—at least for now—of the event’s fixed presence at the Santerno circuit, which had been a regular fixture since 2020. In its place, the much-debated Madrid Grand Prix will debut, further strengthening Formula 1’s push into new markets and urban formats.
Despite the disappointment, not all hope is lost. This reassurance comes directly from Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, who, in an interview with the newspaper Il Resto del Carlino, reignited the hopes of Italian fans.
“It’s not a farewell and not even an irreparable defeat. I’ve said from the start that we must acknowledge reality. Those who organize global events have requirements that cannot be ignored. That said, Imola remains in the picture.” – the former Ferrari team boss pointed out.
Imola will be the first reserve in 2026, aiming to return in 2027
The Romagna circuit could still be back on track as early as 2026 if one of the 24 scheduled races is canceled. Stefano Domenicali clarified that Imola has been officially designated as the first reserve: “In fact, Imola is the number one reserve for 2026. If for any reason a venue is dropped, we will return to Santerno with our cars and drivers.”
Looking to the medium term, Formula 1 is reportedly considering a rotation system among historic European circuits, which would allow Imola to alternate with other tracks like Spa or Zandvoort: “From 2027, we could consider a rotation among classic European tracks. It’s an idea we’re discussing with the relevant parties.”
In response to the final question from interviewer Leo Turrini—“But will you really return with the Grand Prix?”—Stefano Domenicali left no room for doubt: “Yes, we will be back.” Words that reignite hope for Italian fans attached to a circuit as historic and iconic as Imola. Now the wait is on for the official 2026 calendar, expected to be published in the coming days.
