According to reports from Pedro Fermin, a well-known Spanish journalist, Formula 1 is reportedly considering the possibility of racing during the week, aiming to hold 30 races in a year.
Midweek races?
Liberty Media has proposed to teams to have 3 Grand Prix races in 7 days. One possible scenario, for instance, could involve racing on a Sunday in Canada, on a Wednesday in Austin, and on a Saturday in Mexico.
This proposal might be part of the negotiations for the new Concorde Agreement. Clearly, it is a solution that would be adopted in the long term, certainly not for the 2024 Formula 1 season, which already has a fixed schedule.
It would be a sensational revolution, overturning a system known for over 70 years, namely racing only on weekends.
However, implementing such a revolution won’t be easy, especially because the potential new head of Liberty Media and the FOM might be against it.
Toto Wolff opposes?
Pedro Fermin himself stated: “Stefano Domenicali would be replaced, but Toto Wolff wants to be the head of Liberty Media and the FOM.” – he pointed out – “He wants absolute control of the F1 World Championship. All this could happen during the negotiations for the new Concorde Agreement,” – the Spanish journalist concluded.
According to the rumors reported by the Spanish journalist, the current Team Principal of Mercedes would prefer the “rise to power” also to block the proposal of midweek races. It seems that the Austrian wants to impose a maximum of 25 races per year, maintaining a balance between races held in North America, Europe, and the rest of the world.
