Formula 1 is reportedly considering a sensational change in the way points are awarded, starting with the upcoming championship.. According to Autosport, the main goal is to allocate points to the top 12 finishers instead of 10. Specifically, the changes will affect the lower positions rather than the top ones: starting from eighth place, there will be a descending scale from 5 points to 1 (given to the 12th place finisher).
Teams, the FOM, and the FIA will discuss this in the upcoming Formula 1 Commission meeting in Geneva. For this rule to be approved (which could come into effect as soon as 2025), the support of six out of ten constructors is needed. It’s not difficult to imagine who might be interested in such an option – namely, all the lower-ranking teams who often have points snatched away by the usual top five teams. At the same time, without changing the points distribution at the top, even the top teams might welcome the proposal, as it wouldn’t alter their competition fee (the sum of money paid to the FIA at the beginning of the year, based on the points from the previous Formula 1 season).
