Former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, speaking at the Festival of Sport, criticized the current top management of the Prancing Horse, which he believes is not up to par with other top-tier teams. One of the problems that has plagued the Maranello team in recent times is the confusion in terms of hierarchy and the roles of the most important figures, as well as a lack of competitiveness on the track.
Luca di Montezemolo criticizes Ferrari’s organization
“Looking at today’s Ferrari, I believe it is anomalous in terms of organization, especially when compared to other teams, which all have defined figures and roles,” declared the former president of the Scuderia during the Festival of Sport in Trento.
One of the first examples that come to mind concerns the former management under Mattia Binotto. The Italian-Swiss leader strongly wanted to take on both the role of team principal and technical director after the departure of Maurizio Arrivabene. However, the results during his four-year tenure at the helm were not exhilarating.
The question regarding the role occupied by Enrico Cardile also lingered for months, with the latter eventually being officially appointed as the new technical director.
Regarding the driver situation, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo believes that the problems lie elsewhere: “The last of the problems are the drivers. I don’t want to see a Ferrari celebrating a third place, as I perceive it as a true defeat. I’d prefer to see them celebrate real victories, with a car capable of competing for the championship until the final race. This hasn’t happened in many years now. In my career, I’ve won a lot and lost just as much, but it was always until the final race, like with Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.” – he pointed out.
Ferrari fans still vividly remember the bitter defeats at Interlagos in 2008 and Abu Dhabi in 2010. The Brazilian was a world champion for just a few seconds, only to face the ultimate disappointment at the finish line.

The Spaniard didn’t fare much better, as he paid the price for the Maranello pit wall’s decision to pit Mark Webber instead of focusing on Sebastian Vettel, getting stuck behind Vitaly Petrov and eventually handing the title to the German.
It has been since 2012 that Ferrari has not been in contention for a championship at the final race, again with Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel as protagonists. Especially in 2017, 2018, and 2022, the German and Charles Leclerc had the opportunity to have a competitive car for the title for about half the season, only to succumb to Mercedes first and then Red Bull.
