Italian businessman and former Renault F1 team boss Flavio Briatore does not expect Scuderia Ferrari to perform better in the 2017 Formula 1 championship, adding that rivals Mercedes and Red Bull will still be a lot stronger in 2017. After a very disappointing 2016 F1 season, expectations are high for Ferrari to finally return to its rightful place and fight for winning races and titles, as the Italian team has now gone ten years without a drivers’ title, but the former Renault Formula One managing director does not predict any change for 2017:
“The team is still the same. When you have the same oven and the same bakers, the quality of the bread is also the same. It seems to me that the only thing different is that Sergio Marchionne has made no statements this time.” – said Flavio Briatore, as quoted on Monday by Italian sport newspaper Tuttosport. Like many others, Flavio Briatore thinks that it is Red Bull Racing who stand the best chance of fighting with Mercedes this year, although he admits that it will not be easy for anyone to dethrone the reigning champions: “But unfortunately, Mercedes’ advantage is unbridgeable and they have a driver in (Lewis) Hamilton who last year had fun DJ-ing and skiing but this year I think his attitude will be a lot different this time.” – the former Renault boss added.
Flavio Briatore was a key figure in the early stages of Michael Schumacher‘s career, giving him the tools with which to construct his extraordinary Formula 1 dominance wih Scuderia Ferrari. In the end, Flavio Briatore commented on the sad fate of the former Benetton and Ferrari driver: “I have no news. What I get is reflected from Jean Todt and Felipe Massa and it is neither good nor bad. And no good news is usually bad news.” – Flavio Briatore concluded.
