Is emotional frustration more powerful than physical pain? Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz could certainly provide a more detailed explanation in relation to the events that took place last weekend at the 6.174-kilometre Jeddah Circuit in Saudi Arabia. Despite his stoic participation in Thursday’s first two free practice sessions, the Ferrari man was eventually forced to wave the white flag due to an appendicitis diagnosis that prematurely ended his competition in the second round of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
The exemplary professionalism shown by the son of the four-time Paris-Dakar winner, however, was confirmed by his unexpected yet welcome presence in the Ferrari team box on race day (last Saturday). This was just a short time after the delicate surgical operation that saw Carlos Sainz visibly limping, while his father was engaged in interesting conversations with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
No one would have bet their usual coffee on such an encouraging performance by Ferrari Driver Academy member Oliver Bearman, as it was unforeseeable that the eighteen-year-old British driver hastily catapulted into the most important category of motorsport on Friday morning could show such authority. Ollie Bearman’s performance rightly generated much discussion among the fans and the media, as it has been a long time since a rookie convinced everyone with a solid, mistake-free performance, culminating in a points finish.
After the event, it can be stated that the performance of the English driver limited the damage for Scuderia Ferrari, because the absence of the much more experienced lead driver could weigh heavily on the overall result in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix following the Jeddah weekend. Likely, on Saturday evening, in addition to the wound from the recent operation, Carlos Sainz’s mood was severely tested by the convincing performance of the young Ferrari driver.
Due to another championship that seems to be marked by a lack of enthusiasm among fans considering the Red Bull dominance, Oliver Bearman has brought a breath of fresh air to the entire sport. Indeed, who wouldn’t want to see the native of Chelmsford back in action in the Maranello red car, to definitively understand if everything went the right way in Saudi Arabia or if we are facing a new emerging talent from the Ferrari Driver Academy. With the possible return of the Spanish driver to the Albert Park track in Australia, still in doubt as reminded by Fred Vasseur himself, Oliver will go back to racing in Formula 2, continuing to test the red cars.

We are certain that Carlos Sainz will do everything to be present at the third round of the 2024 Formula One campaign. The Spaniard needs to extract the best from himself to sit at various negotiation tables. The goal? To negotiate as soon as possible with the management of his next Formula 1 team based on a brilliant season. The unexpected appendicitis could be a significant problem for the Spaniard, as well as the excellent debut of Oliver Bearman, which has won over the hearts of the Prancing Horse fans.
It seems more than obvious that any underperformance by Carlos Sainz during this championship will bring Oliver Bearman’s convincing debut to the minds of the Tifosi and not only. From a purely technical standpoint, the debut of a third driver behind the wheel of the Ferrari car has demonstrated one clear fact: the SF-24 is a predictable car that does not force drivers to make mistakes, a far cry from the SF-23 single-seater, which, despite setups designed to make it more stable, on more than one occasion betrayed a driver with enormous sensitivity like Charles Leclerc.
On an extremely fast track where the walls are grazed at insane speeds, Oliver Bearman made a couple of minor mistakes during the first lap. However, the young Englishman simply tried to stay out of trouble as much as possible, then set the pace and follow his race engineer’s directions. Subliminally, it was conveyed that even a rookie driver with only an hour and a half of apprenticeship, namely the final free practice session, thenQ1 and Q2, can go very fast with this Ferrari.
Certainly not at the crazy levels of the Red Bull aliens or those of the more experienced Monegasque driver, but certainly, with a few more hours of driving under his belt, thinking that Oliver Bearman could approach the performance of the lead drivers does not seem like science fiction scenario at all.
Lastly, one final consideration: for the near future, it appears the Italian team can count on a talent that hopefully, in the coming seasons, will have the opportunity to grow and gain experience to finally enter the highest category of motorsport through the front door, as Haas is most likely the team that will give the Ferrari Driver Academy member a seat on the Formula 1 grid for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
