A Montreal to forget for Ferrari
From a sweet success to one decidedly less satisfying race weekend: Frederic Vasseur went from a dip in the Monaco Harbor to the rain in Montreal, which marked the second double zero points finish under the French manager’s leadership after the one in Melbourne in 2023 (Charles Leclerc went off track on the first lap and Carlos Sainz was removed from the points zone due to a five-second penalty served under Safety Car conditions).
At the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz started from the sixth row and were unable to progress. The Monegasque had a problem with the electrical part of the power unit, costing him more than a second per lap in terms of pace, while the Spaniard had to contend with floor problems.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur commented on a bitter Sunday, hoping it will be the worst of this 2024 Formula season: “A very tough weekend for all of us. With Charles, we had an engine problem that caused us to lose about 80 horsepower for around fifteen laps: we were hoping for a red flag to perform a reset and restart, but it didn’t happen, so we had to stop during the race. At that point, Charles was lapped, and his Grand Prix was effectively over. Carlos didn’t have a good start and remained stuck in the pack for a long time. Then, unfortunately, there was the contact that damaged the floor and rear wing, making it impossible for him to continue. Surely, it was a weekend that went wrong from the beginning. Let’s put it this way: we hope we’ve gathered all the problems in this Grand Prix and that we’ll return to Spain in much better shape. We will analyze everything and see what we could have done differently since, especially on Friday, the race pace seemed good. It’s a long season, and there are bound to be ups and downs, but I hope never to witness such lows again.” – the French team boss concluded at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix.
