Fear of making mistakes
Red Bull has indelibly marked the 2023 Formula 1 season to the point that the Milton Keynes team has already surpassed Mercedes’ record for consecutive wins in the turbo-hybrid era and is one victory away from matching McLaren’s 1988 record of 11 consecutive wins at the start of the championship (a streak that, as highlighted by team principal Christian Horner at the end of the race, has already reached 11 consecutive wins, including Max Verstappen’s victory in Abu Dhabi in the final race of 2022).
In this scenario, all of Red Bull’s rivals should have very little to lose every time they take to the track, even though it is true, as stated by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, that every wrong decision can cost many positions in a field where, behind Red Bull, six teams (Mercedes, Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren, Alpine, and even a surprising Williams) are enclosed within a few tenths.
However, a lack of ambition remains a luxury that Ferrari cannot afford, as also highlighted by Italian F1 expert Alberto Antonini in his analysis of the British Grand Prix. According to today’s edition of Il Corriere dello Sport, Ferrari lacks tranquility because behind the scenes, there are various movements in the technical job market, partly announced by Frederic Vasseur, who has already stated that he has hired a “top guy” for 2025, the flagship of a recruitment campaign that will “make noise,” according to the French manager.
“The engineers are certainly not encouraged to take risks when there is talk of hiring top technicians,” reads the sports newspaper based in Rome. “Are important figures coming? The ones who are coming have to prove they can become important figures. Laurent Mekies said goodbye at Silverstone, and he will not be in Hungary. A great loss for the Ferrari team.” – Alberto Antonini pointed out.

Laurent Mekies had been described by Frederic Vasseur as a “pillar” of Ferrari, a key figure who, along with Peter Bayer, was tasked with turning around an AlphaTauri team in crisis. From Budapest, it will be possible to assess whether and how Frederic Vasseur has effectively absorbed Laurent Mekies’ departure from Ferrari.
