I can’t help but wonder what the reaction would be to Sainz’s drive if Leclerc had functional brakes and was able to drive the car at its maximum pace (which, judging from the long runs of practice, would be at least 3-4 tenths faster per lap than Sainz). My guess is that it would be seen as another standard Sainz drive: solid but unspectacular, and slower than his teammate.
However, since the entire idea of Sainz being on a mission to prove himself and ignoring the team’s requests is good for headlines and drama, they overlook that crucial detail. It was a good drive but that’s it. Jeddah will be an impleasant wake-up call for some people.
