Formula 1 sometimes holds pleasant surprises for us. Other times, not so much. Yesterday was undoubtedly an emotional day for the vast motorsport enthusiast audience. We expected to see a competitive Ferrari fighting for the top 3, but instead, we witnessed Charles Leclerc finishing Q3 in a surprising P6, behind the McLarens and Zhou, while Carlos Sainz couldn’t go beyond Q2 due to limitations with the Medium tires.
Furthermore, the pole position was not claimed by Max Verstappen, but by the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who clocked a 1’16”609 lap, beating Max by a mere 3 milliseconds and putting Mercedes back in the lead on the grid. The qualifying session for the Hungarian Grand Prix was intense, and being a track with a rather unique nature, there were incidents where drivers risked obstructing each other.
While Carlos Sainz narrowly avoided contact with his teammate during Q1, Lance Stroll was under investigation by the stewards for a potential impeding incident involving Bottas, also during the first 18-minute session. After listening to the drivers and their representatives, the sporting judges concluded that there were no grounds for a penalty. So, there are no changes to the starting order generated by the qualifying session.
Here’s the official starting grid for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, thanks to the tweet released by Formula 1 (Twitter, F1). Hamilton will start from pole position, followed by Verstappen and the two McLaren cars. The Ferrari cars will start from P6 and P11. The race will begin today at 15:00 Italian time.
