Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc’s Saturday at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez ends with a bitter outcome. Charles, who in Q1 and Q2 had made the fans dream of the possibility of a strong result at the Mexican track, was not able to score a better result than eighth position in the final phase of the qualifying session for the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix. In fact, the Ferrari #16 finished last in the decisive phase of qualifying, considering that Tsunoda and Norris were present only to help their respective teammates with the slipstream, taking into consideration their penalties on the grid for tomorrow’s race.

Usually able to raise his driving level when it matters most, this time the young Ferrari talent made a mistake at the decisive moment, failing to complete a perfect Q3 lap. He himself, at the microphones of Sky Sport F1, just after qualifying, admitted without apology his responsibility for a disappointing performance: “Certainly having a car in front in the last sector did not help me – said Charles Leclerc – but I must say that the fault is only mine. I can only be angry with myself. I haven’t been good enough. In the first sector I was doing the lap I wanted. Everything was going well, I was a tenth and a half faster than the lap I had done before. We were there and after that I made some mistakes that don’t fit in Q3”. – he explained.
The Monegasque will start tomorrow from the fourth row, exactly behind Carlos Sainz’s twin SF21 car. The Spaniard was a few tenths faster than him as the two red cars will thus find themselves ‘sandwiched’ with Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren, seventh. “I’m sorry for the team – added Charles Leclerc – because there has been a lot of work since FP1. I was not at all comfortable with the car, I made many mistakes in FP1, FP2 and FP3. In qualifying I finally found the feeling and I was very competitive up to this mistake. It would have been difficult to beat Pierre but we wouldn’t have been far off. So yeah it’s too bad but I can only blame myself. The car was how I wanted it, I’m the one who didn’t do the job today. It is what it is. I’m sorry, I’ll try to learn from this.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
