The arrival and rise of Fernando Alonso in Formula 1 has turned the spotlight of Spain on the premier category of auto racing, a nation that in the did not experience the joy of winning even a world championship grand prix and had had in its best exponent in Alfonso de Portago. The 32 grand prix wins, the 22 pole positions, the two world titles and a multi-purpose and winning career in various categories, have made and still make former Scuderia Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso a guiding star in the history of the sport.
Obviously Carlos Sainz was inspired – in addition to his father, a rally legend – also by his compatriot, as he has highlighted several times in interviews. And his career has also curiously retraced Fernando Alonso’s footsteps, starting with Toro Rosso – the former Minardi – just like the two-time world champion, and moving to Renault, McLaren and Ferrari: exactly the same steps taken by the Oviedo driver during the his long career in Formula 1. The results are not comparable, at least for now, given that Carlos Sainz has not been driving cars capable of fighting for wins, but Carlos was still able to show his constancy and adaptability, which allowed him to obtain good results almost immediately despite team changes: “I’ve always been able to adapt well, since I was a boy. This type of challenge is part of my DNA, I have always pointed out how difficult it was to go fast right away, but people seem to notice it only now, when four or five drivers have changed teams and have struggled to match the performance of their respective teammates.” – he explained.
In the long interview granted to the Germans of Auto, Motor und Sport, Carlos Sainz then confessed to having the dream of sharing the garage with Fernando Alonso: “I get along well with all the drivers on the grid and I wouldn’t mind being Fernando Alonso’s teammate. But given that we are at different stages of the career and we race for different teams, the chances are pretty slim.” – the Scuderia Ferrari driver noted the Ferrari driver.
