The seat swap between Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz at Scuderia Ferrari is perhaps the most talked-about news this season. However, the Spaniard doesn’t think he is inferior to the English driver.
In Maranello, they decided to replace Carlos Sainz with the seven-time Formula 1 world champion. The Spanish driver now has more than one offer on the table but has not yet made a decision about his future.
Carlos Sainz’s certainties
During an interview with GQ Spain, Carlos Sainz was asked if, following Ferrari’s decision, he thought Lewis Hamilton was better than him: “Honestly, I don’t think so, obviously not. If you asked this question to the other 18 drivers, they would answer the same way,” said the Ferrari driver.
“I believe I am the best option for any team. If I didn’t have this mentality, I wouldn’t be an F1 driver and I wouldn’t have the competitive spirit that I have. The other drivers will tell you the same thing. That said, I obviously understand Ferrari’s decision. The opportunity to hire a seven-time world champion and what that can bring and attract to a team. For this reason, when I think about it, it didn’t hurt me that much.” – he pointed out – “In the end, it’s not so much that another driver replaces you, but that you are replaced by the best driver in the history of this sport. In the end, if one of them has to replace me, he’s the right one.”
The Spaniard also addressed the issue of being undervalued. From his perspective, those in the F1 environment know his worth very well.
“I don’t think it’s like that for people who know F1 well. I’ve never felt undervalued by team managers, drivers, or people involved in the daily management of the sport. Neither by engineers nor by those who follow the details. Maybe by the media or by people who understand a bit less, or who follow F1 in a more superficial way and haven’t been involved in the details, it’s possible that sometimes I’ve received less attention or have been undervalued.” – Carlos Sainz explained – “But as I always say, the people who matter to me are those who truly understand this sport. In this sense, I’ve never felt undervalued by anyone.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
