The Canadian Grand Prix was a bitter weekend for Scuderia Ferrari, but Carlos Sainz promises to fight back in the next round of the 2024 Formula 1 championship, which will take place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The Spanish driver was forced to retire after an incident between Turn 6 and Turn 7 on lap 54. The Ferrari driver lost control of his car and spun, hitting the innocent Alexander Albon (Williams), who also retired. A zero that adds to Charles Leclerc’s, who was forced to retire the car due to a control unit problem.
A double DNF for Scuderia Ferrari had been missing since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2022. That season, the then F1-75 still seemed capable of challenging Red Bull’s comeback, only to succumb to Milton Keynes’ dominance. The parallel with this year’s Canadian Grand Prix is almost automatic. In a race that was supposed to be an opportunity to close the gap on Max Verstappen, a cold shower came.
A weekend that never took off for Maranello, suffering since Saturday morning in qualifying conditions. The Q2 exclusion certainly didn’t bode well for a triumphant race, but Sunday’s disaster caught everyone by surprise. While Charles Leclerc fought with his power unit as long as humanly possible, even Carlos Sainz couldn’t extract the necessary performance to climb back up the pack.
“This weekend I had no rhythm, not even with the intermediates,” explained Carlos Sainz, as reported by Motorsport-Magazin.com. “I took a lot of risks to stay in the DRS train I was part of. I made a driving error. It’s certainly not ideal. It wasn’t our weekend, for anyone on the team. But I think it’s just a misstep, in Barcelona we will be back where we usually are.” – the Spanish driver pointed out.
If the Canadian forecast seemed favorable to Ferrari, in Spain it will be the opposite. The paddock expects Red Bull to be back in top form, with a likely repeat win for Max Verstappen after the Canadian Grand Prix. However, the surprises in Montreal make it reasonable to expect a certain degree of unpredictability from Barcelona as well. The gaps remain very tight and the World Championship is (finally) exciting.
