Mick Schumacher’s debut in Formula 1 in 2021 with the Haas team was accompanied by significant media attention and favor from virtually all Formula One enthusiasts, especially those who had witnessed Michael’s era with the Ferrari team.
In his debut year among the elites, Mick performed well, considering he had Nikita Mazepin as his teammate. Although Nikita Mazepin had not struggled in the lower categories, he faced various difficulties in Formula 1, making it challenging to clearly gauge his teammate’s worth.
In 2022, for his second year, Mick Schumacher partnered with Kevin Magnussen, creating a more evenly matched pair, not just in qualifying but also during races. Unfortunately, a series of high-impact incidents took a toll on Haas’s budget. Despite improving performances (though not exceptionally fast), the American team decided to replace the former Ferrari Driver Academy member with Nico Hulkenberg for the 2023 Formula 1 season.
This decision was hard to accept and left the young Mick Schumacher without an Formula 1 seat, leading him to accept Mercedes’ offer to be the third driver, allowing him to stay in training and not exit the F1 scene after being sidelined and therefore leaving the Ferrari Driver Academy.
This upward trajectory, experienced by the Michael Schumacher’s son, was recently commented on by former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone in an interview with RTL. Ecclestone first encouraged Mick to keep fighting and perform well in his current ventures, such as his involvement in WEC with Alpine. However, he advised him to forget his name, work on personal and professional growth, and not rely too much on his surname when hoping to be selected.
“He has to fight, stay loyal, and prove that he can still deliver good performances. People will notice him, and he won’t have to find people offering him the opportunity to race. Ideally, people will see him and say, ‘We need him.’ Not the other way around: seeking someone to welcome him because of his name. He should forget his name and develop as a person.”

Bernie Ecclestone then took a jab at Ferrari, suggesting that Mick might have been better understood and supported in the Red Bull junior program than what happened in the Ferrari Driver Academy.
“At Red Bull, for example, he would have been better understood; they would have helped him and taken him higher.”
In conclusion, Bernie Ecclestone approved of Mick Schumacher’s choice to drive in Alpine’s hypercar program in 2024, a chance for him to excel in endurance racing and potentially rekindle interest in Formula 1.
“This is probably the only and best thing he can do right now. It’s good that he can showcase himself with good performances. Then it might happen that Formula 1 decision-makers rethink and say, ‘Maybe we were wrong. We’ll try again.’ The tough question is: how and when?” – he concluded.
