Organisers are confident the 2023 Australian Grand Prix will be the fastest Formula 1 race to take place in Melbourne, following the confirmation of a fourth DRS zone at the Albert Park circuit, which will host the third round of the 2023 Formula 1 campaign in April.
The fourth DRS zone – a first for a Formula 1 race track, was introduced for the 2022 event in Melbourne on a newly upgraded circuit. However, the FIA eventually made the decision of removing it based on safety grounds at the end of the second free practice session.
Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Andrew Westacott, was recently interviewed by Melbourne’s Herald Sun and stated that he had “positive feedback from the FIA and Formula One that technically speaking a fourth DRS zone will be implemented”.
This means that the 2023 Formula 1 cars are expected to reach speeds of 340 km per hour (211 mph) at the Albert Park circuit:
“It will be the fastest race in Melbourne ever. You’ve got the evolution of the cars from last year, and they’ve obviously got better, and the fourth DRS zone means the cars will be quicker around the back of the circuit. Which will obviously increase speed and therefore reduce lap time and make it the quickest Grand Prix and the highest average speed ever in Melbourne.” – Chief Executive Officer Andrew Westacott concluded.

The detection points will most likely not be changed. As was the case with the 2022 project, two detection points will remain: the first in the change of direction between turns 6 and 7, the second immediately before turn 13. Obviously, each of the two detection points ‘applies’ to the following two DRS zones. The Australian Grand Prix, once a classic season-opener, was canceled for two years due to the Coronavirus pandemic and returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2022. This year, it is scheduled for 2 April, after the grand prix of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
