The variables came into play in a big way during the qualifying session for the 2023 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, with cold ambient and track temperatures producing abnormal warm-up and grip regimes for the soft Pirelli tyres. The result was that some of Red Bull’s major rivals moved closer to the world of the undefeated RB19. Max Verstappen still took the pole position – but the two Mercedes drivers, relishing their sudden competitiveness, pushed him hard – as did Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. By contrast, Verstappen’s team-mate, Sergio Perez, fell victim to chronic brake-locking moments and never made it out of Q1, while Ferrari had their own problems on Saturday.
In this video, F1 journalist and former Ferrari general manager Peter Windsor looks back at the results of qualifying and also ahead to what may transpire on race day.
