Formula One’s first ever triple-header drew to a conclusion after three long, busy weeks on the road. After a week at home and back at base, the team’s suitcases are packed and it’s time for the return of the popular German Grand Prix. After a brief hiatus in 2017, Hockenheim returns to the Formula 1 calendar to host the first of another back-to-back race weekend.
This will be the 36th world championship grand prix at the iconic Hockenheimring. The venue was built in 1939, and first hosted the German Grand Prix in 1970. The old Hockenheimring used to be a 6.8km race through deep forest but was dramatically remodelled after the 2000 German Grand Prix because race organisers noticed three major problems. Firstly most of the action from Rubens Barrichello’s spectacular race from 18th place to victory took place in the forest and out of sight of the fans, secondly Jean Alesi had a huge accident at the third chicane and thirdly the track was invaded by a disgruntled ex-Mercedes employee at the team’s home track.
Former Scuderia Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher has triumphed at the German Grand Prix more times than any other driver since the race was included as a part of the Formula One World Championship.
The German Grand Prix has shuffled between two venues, Nürburgring in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg, and included a one-off event at AVUS in Berlin. Although the seven-time world champion has raced at the Nürburgring as well as Hockenheimring, the German has triumphed only at German Grands Prix held at the latter.
