Not since 2010 has Scuderia Ferrari experienced victory at their home race. On that occasion it was Fernando Alonso who was the victor, and arguably that was the last time the team were genuinely competitive in a championship fight. Granted, Alonso’s title challenge in 2012 went to the last race, but that was largely down to the skills of the Spaniard, allied to a freakish season in which the race wins were spread out between a number of drivers allowing for a title challenge despite not having the quickest package.
Sebastian Vettel and Scuderia Ferrari are seriously quick this year and are worthy title contenders, as the German driver still holds the lead in the Formula 1 Driver Standings ahead of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix. A victory at Monza would therfore underline their credentials further. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes will once again be formidable opponents, but Sebastian’s impressive victory at the Hungaroring track and also his strong form in Belgium on last weekend should indicate he should not be discounted, despite the fact that the long Monza straights in theory should better suit the Mercedes engine.
Join us in the afternoon for the latest updates and results from the Monza track, as the qualifying session ahead of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix is about to get underway in Monza, with Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen ready to fight with rivals Mercedes and Red Bull Racing for a front row start ahead of the race on Sunday.
