Scuderia Ferrari have focused on producing a car with more downforce this season after lagging behind Mercedes for much of 2019, in which they Italian team could win only three races. However, Sebastian Vettel was 12th fastest overall after suffering an engine failure midway through the morning testing session on Friday that curtailed his running until the afternoon. The overall feeling, confirmed also by Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto, is that the Italian side at the moment cannot match the pace and performance of rivals Mercedes and Red Bull.
Italian blogger Leo Turrini, who is famously very close to proceedings at Scuderia Ferrari, reflects on the first testing session ahead of the 2020 Formula One season, in a recent article published on his quotidiano.net blog:
“I imagine that everyone has read or listened to Mattia Binotto’s interviews. There is not much to comment on. I appreciate the language of truth. Let’s put it like this: the first aerodynamic package of the SF1000 does not work. So far the problems of 2019 have not been solved for now. The car suffers from understeer and the performance on a fast lap (even though the team did not search for such laps) are still far away from the Mercedes (and Red Bull) levels. This is the situation. Today. Next week in Barcelona, Ferrari will bring the changes and will chase, trying to show their best projection of the car’s possible performance. Good luck and good weekend.” – Leo Turrini wrote.
