German professional racing driver Nick Heidfeld who currently drivers for Mahindra Racing Formula E Team in Formula E, was interviewed by www.waz.de, discussing Sebastian Vettel’s Formula 1 and Ferrari career.
You met Sebastian Vettel during your career, when you drove with Robert Kubica at BMW, Vettel was a test driver. Did you think it was possible that he would become world champion?
Nick Heidfeld: “Honestly? I wouldn’t have thought that. He did a good job, especially in the series up to Formula 1. But in the tests I didn’t perceive him as outstanding. There was also a request from another team that was considering whether they should take him and I also said that I did not see him as a “high-flyer.” I was obviously wrong about that. But what is important: he is very intelligent. He is one of those drivers who learn from mistakes, see opportunities and develop further.”
In the past season he needed this ability..
Nick Heidfeld: “I don’t see it that way. There are not many coincidences, but from time to time it just doesn’t work. For example he just had bad luck against Verstappen in Suzuka. Later in the season, unlike Lewis, he had to take risks.”
Sebastian Vettel is under pressure at Ferrari because he hasn’t clinched a title yet. Can he still make it?
Nick Heidfeld: “I think so. If someone can make it, it’s Seb. Because he’s someone who not only has enormous potential, but is also intelligent and can help build a team.”
