Scuderia Ferrari should have Max Verstappen in their sights in order to successfully challenge Lewis Hamilton and end Mercedes’ domination of Formula One. That is the verdict of former GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi, who says the Ducthman is “much better than” Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas.
Mercedes are currently in the midst of a successful streak which looks set to continue with Hamilton on course for another World Drivers’ Championship. The German manufacturers are set to claim the constructors’ title too thanks to the efforts of the 33-year-old and team-mate Bottas.
Scuderia Ferrari should focus on finding a driver who can contend with Lewis Hamilton given Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen’s failure to do so. Davide Valsecchi has now identified Max Verstappen as the driver Mercedes and Ferrari should be lining up to fight the Brit: “If I were Mercedes, I would contract Verstappen as Hamilton’s successor: one world champion goes and the other comes. Perfect right?” Valsecchi told Dutch magazine Formule 1 – “And if I was Ferrari and want to challenge Mercedes, I would get Verstappen immediately. Only I do not decide that, unfortunately.”
Valsecchi’s comments came after he claimed Verstappen is the one current driver who can stop Hamilton: “In my view, Verstappen is the only one who can beat Hamilton,” Valsecchi said. “He can cause panic in Lewis’ head. It is deadly sin that Max does not have a champion car. Now Hamilton is unbeatable because he has no competition. Max is much better than Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas.” – Sky Sport Italia F1 pundit Davide Valsecchi added – “[Verstappen] is extremely young, extremely good and extremely arrogant. Although, arrogant may not be the right word. He has a lot of self-confidence: ‘I am the best, fuck you’. I love that. Max is a killer, always aggressive and blood-fast. You need that to become champion.” – Davide Valsecchi concluded.
