The venue for the penultimate round of 2018, Interlagos is closely connected to the country’s racing heros: Emerson Fittipaldi, Carlos Pace and Ayrton Senna. It was Fittipaldi who blazed the trail for Brazilians in F1, where he proved a revelation when he arrived in the ’70s complete with rock-star hair and sideburns. With his success came calls for a Brazilian Grand Prix, and in 1973 F1 made its debut at Interlagos. The São Paulo track saw the one and only victory of Carlos Pace, and was named after him following his death. After a spell in Rio, the race was restored to São Paulo in 1990, in time for the Paulista to watch local hero Ayrton Senna win in ’91 and ’93.
