Formula 1 is ready for the sixth round of the championship (2017 Monaco Grand Prix) and heads to the Principality of Monaco this weekend for its always enticing mix of glamour and speed, as Scuderia Ferrari will atempt to once again challenge rivals Mercedes and retake the lead in the Formula 1 Driver Standings. However, not since Michael Schumacher’s 2001 victory has the Maranello team managed to scored a win at Monaco, in the hope that 16 years later Sebastian Vettel or Kimi Raikkonen will be able to put an end to this win-less streak.
For more than obvious reasons, the tight and narrow Monaco circuit is very often considered to be a track where one of the most important aspects is to try to qualify on pole position in order to have the best chance at winning the Grand Prix on Sunday. Although this was not the case when it comes to the two most recent events here, all but one from the 11 races prior to that were won by the driver who started from first place on the grid. Needless to say, overtaking is a rarity at Monaco, but despite the fact that there is usually less action on the track, the circuit has been called “an exceptional location of glamour and prestige”, with the Monaco GP seen as the jewel in the F1 crown.
Mercedes arrive in Monte-Carlo with the strong position given by the four consecutive wins added to their name at the Monaco Grand Prix, including three in a row by current F1 champion Nico Rosberg alongside Lewis Hamilton’s second career win at the track, which took place last season.
Fernando Alonso will not take part in this Grand Prix, as the former Scuderia Ferrari driver has chosen to race in the Indianapolis 500 instead. As a result, Jenson Button will have the opportunity to make a one-off return to Formula One.
